Week 6: Hakuna Kulala

MC Yallah x Debmaster – Teba Kuda Mabega

MC Yallah X Debmaster – Teba Kuda Mabega HK015

What makes this song so intriguing to me is how African dance music and rave/techno music are blended together. Combining her harsh, aggressive rap style with electronic music’s progressive slabs of distortion, MC Yallah creates a powerful blend and has the ability to use this to her advantage. This interests me because, coming from Europe, rave music and Ugandan music are the last two genres I would anticipate hearing combined. She differs from other African musicians, though, in that she can showcase the experimental side of her music and not follow the usual dancehall genre of music a lot of others make. This particular style of music, in my opinion, is more suited for the European techno scene than the majority of songs released under the Hakuna Kulala Label. Her collaborator, Debmaster, is a German artist, and his influence is heavily felt in the production of this track. Despite this, the timbre and percussion choices still have elements of African tribal music. The main melody almost sounds like choirs singing together, drawing from the traditional tribal chants. Other songs by the two, such as ‘Dunia’ and ‘Nasonga’ also follow this sort of genre and style of production.
