It would be challenging to define a music producer due to the fact that there are so many different roles that one may play. For instance, a music producer could be a songwriter, an audio engineer, an instrumentalist or any combination of these; the end result must be something that can be listened to in order to be considered a musical production. In my opinion, a music producer is someone who lays out the foundation for a song by devising the melody, rhythm and instrumental sound choices in order to curate an instrumental. This is typically the part of the process where the songwriter and engineer come into play, working on lyrics, structure, mixing and mastering in order for the final product to sound professional and ready for distribution.
However, I still believe that each of these individuals might still be considered ‘producers’, which is why the term is so ambiguous and a firm judgement is so hard to come by. Also, I feel like contemporary music is becoming much more experimental, therefore the average musician might not even follow the conventional process of creating a track. Modern technology has made it possible for musicians to generate music with greater independence, which is why, in my opinion, there are a plethora of ways to identify as a producer even if you aren’t a “beatmaker.”
In conclusion, I think that my job as a music producer is to express who I am and how I am feeling, while also honing my craft, learning from others, and incorporating new ideas from other musicians who inspire me.
