Week 10: Reflection

From this unit, I have gained knowledge about the evolution and advancement of music production since its inception, in addition to the background and significance of individual musical compositions. I feel more at ease evaluating different approaches to a song’s production and arrangement now that I have a deeper understanding of the evolution of recording over many years. I am also aware of how ideas and techniques for music are developed, and I know how modifying your environment and bringing in ideas from other sources can influence the sound you produce. I believe that my ability to evaluate and gather information on various musical genres and styles, like Week 6’s Hakuna Kulala, is the most valuable skill I’ve gained from this unit. I’ve learned to be more receptive to new sounds and more adept at identifying the influences present in a song as a result of this.

Even though I wasn’t in class as much, I was still able to learn a lot from this unit by finishing the blogs, which provided me with a better understanding of various musical genres and increased my freedom and knowledge when conducting research. In addition to learning about the creation of music, we also learned about studio equipment like microphones, which I believe will help us as producers in the future. I liked this unit overall and learning about genres that aren’t in my comfort zone. The independence which the course has given us has enabled me to strengthen my research skills and gather information more efficiently.
