Week 7: Muslimgauze

Muslimgauze was the creative outlet of Bryn Jones, who was a British ethnic electronica and prolific musician. With releases dating back to 1983, his repertoire now includes 155 albums, 36 singles, 18 compilation albums, 4 miscellaneous works, and 36 EPs. To this day, additional releases continue to be found. Middle Eastern turmoil, and Muslimgauze’s support for Palestine, are recurring themes in all of his writing. In terms of aesthetics, the imagery of conflict and armament, Middle Eastern cities, and Middle Eastern typeface drawn from religious sources dominate his album covers and brand as a whole. His song titles tend to reflect this too, with name such as “I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free” and “This Is My Palestine”. Jones never converted to Islam and he isn’t even from the Middle East, despite his project name. Muslimgauze is a pun on the word muslin, which refers to a particular kind of gauze. Combined with Muslim, alludes to Jones’s obsession with issues in the Muslim world. More than anything else, rhythm is the central theme of Muslimgauze music. Jones was a gifted percussionist who was proficient in both rhythm programming and a broad range of instrument play. Therefore, several distinct layers of rhythm will usually be present, followed by sparse keyboard sounds that are more atmospheric than melodic and frequently handled with echo and reverb in a style that is heavily influenced by dub.
