Week 4: Tech in Music Production

The technological revolution that has changed the music industry has an impact on both music production and consumption. Back then, only qualified engineers and reputable studios could record music due to the large, costly equipment needed. The ability to create music is now more accessible due to advancements in digital recording technology. More affordable recording equipment and software has enabled artists to create professional-quality recordings without the need of an expensive studio, which in turn has changed the way artists and producers work. Due to the fact that musicians are no longer restricted by the walls of traditional recording studios, there is a rise in independent musicians and a broadening of musical genres.

When it comes to music consumption, digital streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music have greatly simplified the process for consumers to find and enjoy new music. With the aid of social media, it has also allowed up-and-coming artists to expand at a faster rate. Artists and producers can engage with their audience more frequently with the help of apps like Instagram and TikTok. Unfortunately, I believe that the rise of social media has hurt the music business because it has made it much simpler for artists to succeed due to the presence of labels and A&R’s on these platforms. As a result, we are witnessing artists struggle to develop a cult-like following compared to what bands like The Beatles had in the past. Artists also receive more feedback from their fans, which can be a good and a bad thing, depending on how the artist is as a person.

In conclusion, the development of technology in the music industry has many benefits and drawbacks. It’s good for those who wish to pursue careers in music, but as they develop and gain popularity, it can have both positive and negative effects.
